Life with a Mastiff puppy.

English Mastiffs are a giant breed. Adult males typically weigh 75–100 kg and stand around 75 cm at the shoulder; females are usually a little smaller. That cute 6 kg puppy will grow rapidly in the first year, so space, feeding and exercise plans need to scale with them.

When raised and socialised well, Mastiffs are famously gentle, patient family dogs. They are usually calm around children and tend to form strong bonds. As with any large breed, supervision is important with very small children simply because of the dog's size.

Less than many people expect. Adult Mastiffs are generally happy with two moderate walks a day and plenty of time resting. Puppies should not be over-exercised while their joints are developing; short, gentle play sessions on soft ground are best until they are fully grown.

A high-quality, large-breed puppy food is essential to support slow, steady growth and healthy joints. We feed our puppies a balanced diet and provide a feeding plan when they leave. Avoid overfeeding or high-calorie treats, as Mastiffs can gain weight quickly.

Mastiffs have a short, dense coat that is easy to maintain. A weekly brush keeps shedding under control and helps you check skin folds, ears and paws. Regular nail trims and cleaning between the wrinkles are the main extra tasks.

Like many large breeds, Mastiffs can be prone to hip and elbow dysplasia, heart conditions and bloat. We health-test our breeding stock and raise puppies carefully, but prospective owners should budget for good vet care, insurance and a responsible feeding routine.

Mastiffs are intelligent and eager to please, but they can be independent and slow to mature. Consistent, positive training from day one works best. Early socialisation with people, dogs, sounds and travel is the single most important investment you can make.

A Mastiff does not need a huge garden, but they do need enough room to stretch out, turn around and rest comfortably. A secure garden is important, and they are happiest when they can be near their people for most of the day.

A large, sturdy bed; food and water bowls; a puppy-safe area; a collar and lead; toys suitable for strong jaws; and a vet appointment booked for within the first few days. We send our new owners a checklist to make the first week as smooth as possible.
